Aru Valley — The Quiet Alpine Paradise of Pahalgam

Just 12 km from Pahalgam town, Aru Valley offers a quieter, more intimate alpine experience than its famous neighbour Betaab Valley. Here is everything you need to know.

Getting There The 12-km road from Pahalgam to Aru winds through pine forests along the Lidder River. The drive takes 30–40 minutes. The road is narrow but well-maintained. Shared taxis ply this route for ₹200–300 per person, or you can book a private cab for ₹800–1,200 round trip. The road is accessible only from May to November — winter snow closes it completely.

What to Expect Aru sits at 2,400 metres in a wide, U-shaped valley carved by ancient glaciers. The river here is narrower and faster than in Pahalgam. The valley is less commercialised — a handful of guesthouses, a few cafes, and miles of open meadows. The silence is the main attraction.

Activities Pony rides are the top activity — you can ride up to Lidderwat (4 km) or further to Kolahoi Glacier (12 km, full-day trek). The Aru meadows are perfect for picnics and slow walks.
