Pahalgam, at 2,130 metres, is a destination for all seasons — but each season offers a dramatically different experience. Here is your guide to choosing the perfect time.
Summer (May to August) — The Green Season
This is when Pahalgam is at its most beautiful. The meadows are impossibly green, the Lidder River runs full and clear, and the wildflowers are in bloom. Temperatures range from 12°C to 25°C — perfect for pony rides, valley walks, and day trips to Betaab and Aru Valleys. June and July are the peak tourist months. August is slightly quieter and coincides with the Amarnath Yatra, so the town has a pilgrimage atmosphere. Book accommodation 3–4 weeks ahead.
Autumn (September to October) — Golden Tranquility
The crowds thin out, the air turns crisp, and the surrounding forests take on golden hues. September is particularly lovely — warm days (18°C–22°C) and cool nights. Trout fishing is excellent in October. This is the best time for photographers and couples seeking a peaceful escape.
Winter (November to March) — Snow Season
Pahalgam transforms into a winter wonderland. December and January bring substantial snowfall — the town averages 2–3 metres of snow annually. Temperatures drop to −5°C to 5°C. The Lidder River partially freezes. Fewer tourists mean near-empty streets and magical, silent landscapes. Some hotels close for the season; check availability before planning. Not all day-trip destinations (Betaab, Aru) are accessible in deep snow.
Spring (April) — Transition Window
April is a shoulder month — patches of snow remain, but the first green shoots appear. It is quiet, affordable, and the weather is unpredictable (0°C–12°C). The melted snow makes the Lidder River especially photogenic.
Our Recommendation
First-time visitors should aim for June to September for the full Pahalgam experience — lush valleys, all destinations open, and comfortable weather. Snow lovers should visit in January. Budget travellers will find the best deals in April and October.
